The King's Bishop's Gambit.

meeting the threat of the Check by evacuating a square for the King.

3 ... Q-R5ch.
K-B1 P-Q4

Necessary to support the attack. Unless aid comes immediately forward, the Queen is soon repulsed, for instance, 4 ... P-KKt4; 5 Kt-QB3 B-Kt2; 6 P-Q4 Kt-K2; (or 6 ... P-Q3; 7 P-K5 PxP; 8 Kt-Q5 ] 7 P-KKt3.

This is an analysis made about sixty years ago. 7 ... PxP; 8 K-Kt2 Q-R3; 9 PxP Q-KKt3; 10 Kt-B3 P-KR3. Matters for Black grow now rapidly from bad to worse. 11 Kt-Q5 KtxKt; 12 PxKt O-O; 13 P-Q6 QxQP; 14 BxP PxB; 15 Q-Q3 R-K1; 16 Q-R7ch. K-B1; 17 BxP with a slashing attack.

White will try to keep the diagonal of the Bishop open. True, also 5 PxP has certain advantages, for instance, the opening of a file for the Rook and restriction of the Black QX, but they are of minor importance.

5 ... P-KKt4

Now the advance 6 P-KKt3 is answered by 6 ... B-R6ch.

in order to liberate the KX.

10 ... P-QB3
11 B-Kt3 B-Kt5
12 P-K5 Kt-B4
13 Kt-K4 Kt-Q2

The game is complicated, but Black keeps at it. He menaces Castling Queen's side.

14 K-Kt1 BxKt
15 PxB O-O-O

In order to reply to 16 PxP Q-Kt3; 17 QBxP with 17 ... KtxKP. And the answer to 16 Kt-Q6ch. KtxKt; 17 PxKt would be 17 ... Q-Kt3; 18 QxQ BxPch. White has over-rushed matters.

However, Black has no need, should he fear those complications, to assume the aggressive, but may safely play for development.

3 ... Kt-QB3
Kt-KB3 Kt-B3
Kt-B3 B-Kt5
P-K5 Kt-Kt5
Kt-Q5 O-O

threatening 8 ..., [!)KXxKP.

KtxB KtxKt
P-Q4 P-Q4
10 B-Kt3 P-KB3

Should White forego the early advance of the KP, Black will easily get an even position.

O-O O-O
P-Q3 BxKt
PxB P-Q4
PxP KtxP
10 BxKt QxB
11 BxP Q-B4ch.
12 K-R1 QxP
13 BxP B-Kt5

These are some of the principal variations of the accepted King's Gambit. But Black may safely decline it though possibly a minute advantage will then accrue to White.
