On the Advantage of the Attack against an Unprotected King.

If the King is exposed to continual Checks and cannot soon find protection behind its own pieces, it is hopelessly lost. The action of Queen, Rook, Bishop against the King is so strong that obstructions are needed to keep the King from being Checkmated. And even if the King is helped by some obstructions, when strong and varied pieces are conducting the attack the obstructions might prove too weak and the King might therefore easily be caught in the meshes of a "Mating net."

The Black pieces stand apart from their King. They are powerful for attack but seem to have forgotten their duty of defence. The White army, weak in numbers but well placed, succeeds in a quick thrust.
